A True Journal of the Sallee Fleet - 1745

[NOTE: This document is included here for clarification.  This is not an account by the writer and publisher John Dunton, but by a "mariner" of the same name.  Written prior to the birth of the publisher John Dunton, this mariner's sea diary is an account of the activities of English fleet sent against Turkish pirates of Sallee from January to October of 1636.

Complete account extracted out of a contemporary collection of voyages. Quarto. 8 pages (491-498)pp. Handsome period style brown half gilt cloth with marbled boards. A fine copy. The author had at one time been a prisoner of the pirates, but had redeemed himself from Sallee. He was then sent out as master and pilot on a Sallee man-of-war, with 21 Moors and some Flemish renegades, to the coast of England to take prisoners. He brought the boat to the Isle of Wight where he was captured and detained as a pirate. Upon trial he was released, and then was put in command of an expedition to effect the release of Christian captives. Some 399 prisoners were thus rescued. Dunton states that his only son of ten years of age was a slave in Algiers and like to be lost to him forever. The year of the expedition was 1636(Cox II p.433)

Account written by John Dunton.  Published by Thomas Osborne in "A collection of voyages and travels" [London 1745, 2 volumes]
